We are absolutely delighted to welcome Karen Darke MBEÂ as the new Patron of Just Wheels.
Karen is a Paralympic gold medallist, adventurer, author and speaker whose life and work embody resilience, determination and possibility. After a climbing accident left her paralysed from the chest down at the age of 21, Karen rebuilt her life on her own terms - going on to win Paralympic gold, cycle and handcycle across continents, and inspire countless people around the world through her writing and public speaking.

Karen’s values align powerfully with Just Wheels’ mission. Like us, she believes that mobility is about far more than movement—it’s about freedom, dignity and opportunity. Access to the right equipment at the right time can unlock education, independence and participation in everyday life, especially for young people facing disability and poverty.
As Patron, Karen's advocacy will help us raise awareness of global disability inequality, and remind supporters what is possible when barriers are removed. For our beneficiaries, Karen is a relatable role model with lived experience of disability, and will help our young people see a future full of potential.
Karen’s journey reminds us why Just Wheels exists: talent and ambition are everywhere, but opportunity is not. With the right support, disabled young people can thrive.
We are hugely grateful to Karen for lending her voice, energy and belief to our work—and we can’t wait to see what we will achieve together.
Welcome to Just Wheels, Karen!
